Get Ready

Money, tipping, WiFi access, what to wear, local climate and packing tips—the following information aims to help you prepare and pack for our Modern Adventure in Portugal.

COVID-19

Modern Adventure, in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), requires that all guests be fully vaccinated with an accepted COVID-19 vaccine and provide proof of documentation before joining any trip.

The CDC defines fully vaccinated as 14 days after receiving:

  • a single dose of an accepted 1-dose vaccine

  • the second dose of an accepted 2-dose vaccine

  • The full series of an active (not placebo) COVID-19 vaccine in the US-based AstraZeneca or Novavax COVID-19 vaccine trials

  • The second dose of any “mix and match” combination of accepted COVID-19 vaccines (administered at least 17 days apart)

We strongly recommend that guests who are eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster shot do so in preparation for their travel. Destinations and their local laws may have different requirements and definitions of what constitutes full vaccination. Guests who have not received a booster dose may be prevented from traveling to certain destinations.

In addition, it may be a requirement to provide a negative COVID-19 test result prior to your departure and your return to your home country. Information will be provided in guest communications leading up to your trip. By booking a Modern Adventure you are agreeing to these terms and to providing proof of vaccination.

Medications

If you are on prescription medication, you should ask your doctor for a letter detailing your condition and prescribed drugs. This prevents possible issues at customs and helps the local doctor if you need to buy medication while traveling. If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, we recommend you bring an extra pair and a copy of the prescription in case of emergency.

Climate

July, near the end of the warm summer season, is an excellent time to visit Portugal. The weather in Lisbon is typically clear and sunny, with daily average highs in the low 80sF and lows around 64F. There are usually only a few days with rain throughout the month of July. In Porto the weather is a bit cooler, with average highs near 77F and lows around 58F, with an average of five days with rain.

Electricity

In Portugal the power plugs and sockets are type F with a standard voltage of 230 volts, which is different from North America (120v). For guests traveling from the US, you will need a power-plug adapter as well as a voltage converter before plugging in appliances and electrical devices.

Internet & Phones

Our accommodations offer Wi-Fi, and we recommend using Wi-Fi supported apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime or Skype as an alternative to making calls from your mobile phone. For American travelers, many phone providers have temporary international travel plans, check with your provider for options.

Clothing

Casual clothing will be appropriate for most of our time together. Layering is the best option for the daily temperature changes and types of activities on your trip. We recommend bringing casual short and long sleeve layers (lightweight tees, shirts, pants, dresses, and shorts) as well as a bathing suit, hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. We would consider natural, breathable fabrics. Comfortable walking shoes are essential—sneakers, sandals, sport sandals or cool open-toed shoes, usually flat. We do suggest bringing a light jacket as well as a raincoat, just in case.

We will have two evening to dine on our own. If you want to make reservations at an upscale restaurant, you may want to bring a more formal option.

There are a few additional items that we recommend you to bring:

  • Hat (to protect yourself from the sun)

  • Sunscreen & sunglasses

  • Sandals or flip-flops

  • Sturdy walking shoes

  • Bathing suit

  • Phone charger

  • Headphones

  • Travel pillow

  • Ear plugs

Money & Tipping

The local currency is the euro, worth roughly 1 euro to $1.10 US dollar. There are numerous ATMs in Portugal to access your bank back home. Many restaurants and shops accept credit cards; however Portugal is a cash-centric country, and you will want some euro notes when traveling outside of the main cities.

We curate your Modern Adventure to ensure all experiences are immersive and included in your trip price. We recommend bringing enough money with you for a few meals on your own, as well as any souvenirs or local arts and crafts you might like to bring back.

If you're eating out on your own, tipping 5% to 10% in restaurants is standard. No tip is expected for small purchases such as coffee or a beverage, although it's common enough to leave the change, rounded up to the closest euro.

Please note that tipping our local and Modern Adventure guides is at your discretion; to show your appreciation for good service, we recommend tipping each guide US$70 - $150 per guest.

Visas & Passports

US citizens are not required to have a visa for stays in Portugal of under 90 days. Just bring a valid US passport. For citizens of other countries, please check with the Portuguese embassy or consulate for information and requirements.

Travel Insurance

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement for your trip costs; if your trip plans change for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to get medical help, emergency transport, and for theft, loss or damage of items while traveling.

For best coverage, always insure the full trip cost within two weeks of your initial trip deposit and note that most 'Cancel For Any Reason' policies must be purchased on the date of your initial deposit.

While Modern Adventure does not recommend any policy specifically, we encourage you to compare benefits and options, a few of which are listed below. We recommend that any plan you select includes trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, at minimum.
